After-School Clubs

Forensics (Mrs. Stokes) 

Forensics is competitive public speaking. Categories of competition involve formal speech, performance, interpretive reading, and storytelling. It is a team academic sport that requires dedication, practice and a desire to have fun while improving self-confidence and communication skills. The team meets once per week during the school year and competes in the Forensics League of Tidewater Catholic Middle Schools tournament in March. Open to Middle School Students.
 
Chess Club (Mr. Reavis)


The Chess Club welcomes all students, regardless of experience, who are interested in playing chess. The club meets once a week. Students will have opportunities to learn about the game, play chess with peers, and participate in tournaments. This is the club for you whether you want to relax and play chess with your friends or you want to prepare for tournaments.

 
Jeopardy Tournament (Mr. Goldberg)


The middle school jeopardy tournament is held every year in which students compete in our state of the art media center using Classroom Jeopardy.  The game brings all the sights, sounds, and non-stop thrills of TV's Jeopardy - from the Daily Double to the Final Jeopardy! The championship round is held during a middle school assembly in our gymnasium.

 
Geo-Caching Club (Mrs. Boucher)
 
Geocaching is an outdoor treasure hunting game using hand-held GPS (Global Positioning System) units to locate hidden treasure boxes. Geocaching is great fun for every age.  It develops orienteering skills, an understanding of GPS map reading, fosters the ability to use a computer, reading, and navigating the geocaching website.  www.geocaching.com   There are over 1,200 geocaches just in our school zip code alone!  
SMS Geocaching Club is open to all students at SMS, including grades Pre-K through 8.  This club is intended to be a parent and child activity.  All children must be accompanied by an adult.  Club meetings and outings will be scheduled to accommodate working parents by being held in the early evenings or on a Saturday or Sunday. Meetings are held the 3rd Monday of every month at SMS at 6:15 pm.  Meeting dates are subject to change on dates when school is not in session.  
 
Junior Lego-League (Mrs. Hardesty)
 
The Junior Lego League is open to students in first through third grades.  The “SMS Lego Masters” meet twice each month and work on the basics of building, simple machines, use of a motor and teamwork.  By the end of the school year, the league will complete the project assigned by the international Junior FIRST Lego League and will present it in a public forum.   
 
Senior Lego-League (Mrs. Harrell)
 
FIRST LEGO League is open to students ages 9-14 committed to working on mental teamwork. Students should be able to collaborate on ideas and concepts required for the annual theme. The team meets once a week from August to November and more frequently before the local competition. The team completes programming of the robot challenge, a presentation to the judges and questions from the judges on how the work was created, collaborated on and how interpersonal communication of the team was handled. The team has to create solutions for a real world problem relating to the annual challenge and for the robot to complete tasks at the challenge table. 
 
Student Council (Mrs. Folkes)
 
SMS Student Council is a service organization run entirely by the student members. Although the club is responsible for many fun events, like pep rally’s and school socials, the primary goal is to encourage student leadership in schools and communities, and empower young adults to use these skills throughout their lives.
  
Boy Scouts (Mr. Baird)
